PERSONAL PROJECT · MOBILE APP / Degree project 2023 → updated 2026

Gajom.

An application supporting communication for people who have lost the use of their voice. My first independent project, from a personal need to Google Play.

The starting point

How can we talk with someone who cannot speak? Gajom grew out of a family experience and became my final degree project in Computer Engineering at the University of La Laguna, submitted in June 2023.

The aim was to broaden conversations that might otherwise be limited to questions from others and very restricted answers. I designed and developed the application as an independent project of my own initiative.

Designing around communication

  • Pictograms: expressing needs, concepts and ideas through images.
  • TAPs: choosing between a few options in simple exchanges.
  • Question builder: creating and saving questions to initiate conversations.
  • Dictation: giving voice to numbers, letters and text.

Content can be organised into profiles. The design considers both the person communicating and the person configuring the tools for their situation.

During development I have collaborated with a professional speech and language therapist. The project also includes an accessible keyboard and a dedicated user session service.

An application that keeps evolving

In 2026 I updated Gajom with user accounts and sign-in, design improvements and access to the ARASAAC catalogue for creating and editing pictograms.

Gajom is available on Google Play, where its public listing describes current features and updates.
